In international shipping, protecting wood packaging against pests is a critical requirement. That is exactly why the ISPM 15 standard (International Standards for Phytosanitary Measures No. 15) was introduced. It is a globally recognized regulation governing the treatment of wood packaging materials in international trade. In practice, this means that all wooden components must be heat treated (HT) and properly marked before export.
The IPPC mark (in accordance with the International Plant Protection Convention) indicates that the wood has been properly treated and is recognized worldwide. This marking is mandatory for all wood packaging exported outside the EU, especially to regions such as North America, Asia, Australia, or South America. Packaging without this marking is not accepted by many customs authorities.
Heat treatment (HT) means that the wood was heated to a core temperature of at least 56 °C for at least 30 minutes. This process effectively eliminates insects, larvae, and other wood pests, fully meeting the requirements of the ISPM 15 standard. After successful treatment, the wood is marked accordingly and is then approved for global export.
